The Machines

They turned off the machines today
And this place doesn’t make a sound
My pocket’s filled with bills to pay
And I should leave this town

There’s work out in Vancouver
But that’s a lifetime away
This town it might recover
The machines went off today

The traffic lights change
The sun still shines
Can you hear the song
Of the grey power lines
The north winds roll
Out across these idle roads
Do you feel the weight
Of this final load

The parking lot is empty
The trucks have disappeared
Where I stand there’s nothing
The warehouse has been cleared

This town will be forsaken
Everyone will leave
The forest walls will close in
What’s to come of my machines

The traffic lights change
The sun still shines
Can you hear the song
Of the grey power lines
The north winds roll
Out across these idle roads
Do you feel the weight
Of this final load

He drove up towards the skyline
His eyes fixed on the road
He was off to end this killing
as the earth beneath him shuddered
