about

How We Hunger is a concept album telling the story of two characters embracing desire in a dying mill town. The love they make is consuming and the price they pay is steep. It's cinema on a country landscape moving from the murder ballad that opens the album to the train rhythms that propel the action forward to the sparseness of the album's final track.

Track Name: Your Faint Heart
Your Faint Heart

After I pulled the trigger
and watched the bullet leave your head
I knew I had made things final
the tie between us was dead

Picked up your hand, the cold had set in
and the darkness was coming down
I said a prayer and closed your eyes
and collapsed to the ground

A faint heart never knows love
so if all is fair in love and war
you struck first and I struck last, my dear

I walked back to the roadside
got my shovel and my beer
I paused in the moonlight
heard your laughter so clear

The first time I knew I loved you
you reached over and touched my arm
by the river and that same old moonlight
but that too is dead and gone

A faint heart never knows love
so if all is fair in love and war
you struck first and I struck last, my dear

I got back to your body
brushed the flies from your face
remembered you in that sundress
the past lives in its own space

When I finished your grave I laid
next to you on the ground
I saw our future wedding day
oh you in a bridal gown

Why’d you have to wrong me
Why’d I have to love you like I do
you struck first and I struck last, my dear

He drove towards the skyline
Eyes fixed on the road
He was off to end this killing
and the earth beneath him shuddered
Track Name: Turn Me Loose
Turn Me Loose

I rode up this damn highway
With a man from Bunker Hill
The law says he’s my husband
But he just pays my bills

I’m too much for one man
And these north woods never stop
So goodbye to his loving
And hello to the top

Turn me loose on these boys
Who hammer in the mill
‘Cause lovin’s what I’m selling
They’re sure to get their fill
Set me free in the country
Where men are bored and strong
I’ll catch ‘em with my sundress
I’ll take ‘em for a song

I met him in the city
In the summer of my life
I trusted like a child
His eyes were two dice

But winter was cold
And the wind would never end
He started drinking whiskey
I started drinking gin

Turn me loose on these boys
Who hammer in the mill
‘Cause lovin’s what I’m selling
They’re sure to get their fill
Set me free in the country
Where men are bored and strong
I’ll catch ‘em with my sundress
I’ll take ‘em for a song
Track Name: Neon Nights
Neon Nights

She’s got her hands
Wrapped around her man
It’s a neon night in July
The band on the stage
They echo and sway in time

He twirls her ‘round
Wipes sweat from his brow
Her sundress rises and falls
Her glistening skin
And calcine lips they call

This love we found is hungry
And something’s gotta give
‘Cause this living like we’re doing
It ain’t no way to live

The world outside
Might be closing its eyes
But this smoky bar is awake
This boy and this girl
Have the whole damn world to take

It’s quarter to one
The band is done
But the jukebox howls and moans
She moves her hips
He tilts his head and groans

He wants time in his hand
Then he’d make a stand
But it’s pushing them towards the door
The music it fades
Like it never was played before

This love we found is hungry
And something’s gotta give
‘Cause this living like we’re doing
It ain’t no way to live

He takes her home
After they roam
The July night in the heat
She’s somebody’s wife,
But he kisses her twice
In the street
Track Name: The Machines
The Machines

They turned off the machines today
And this place doesn’t make a sound
My pocket’s filled with bills to pay
And I should leave this town

There’s work out in Vancouver
But that’s a lifetime away
This town it might recover
The machines went off today

The traffic lights change
The sun still shines
Can you hear the song
Of the grey power lines
The north winds roll
Out across these idle roads
Do you feel the weight
Of this final load

The parking lot is empty
The trucks have disappeared
Where I stand there’s nothing
The warehouse has been cleared

This town will be forsaken
Everyone will leave
The forest walls will close in
What’s to come of my machines

The traffic lights change
The sun still shines
Can you hear the song
Of the grey power lines
The north winds roll
Out across these idle roads
Do you feel the weight
Of this final load

He drove up towards the skyline
His eyes fixed on the road
He was off to end this killing
as the earth beneath him shuddered
Track Name: Making Meaning
Making Meaning

Well this love’s forbidden
But your fruit is sweet
And that first taste I took it
Knocked me off my feet

You rode into town
On the arm of your man
Falling in love
Was not part of my plan

But the sundress you wore
It rode up your thighs
And when you spoke
You spoke with your eyes

Our paths they crossed
When all here was wrong
Then our lips met
We knew that was gone

This planet’s spinning
And time keeps moving
They say we’re all dying
So where’s the meaning

We may be sinning
But this town is drowning
And if it’s all ending
Let’s make some meaning

We drove through towns
In the cab of my truck
You pointed to families
Down on their luck

We talked of driving
That truck out west
Head for the plains
Put this love to the test

You said, “Why does fate
Need to be so cruel,
And turn a desperate man
Into a fool?”

“Let’s go to the woods,”
You said with a grin.
“I need you to wash me
Over with sin”

This planet’s spinning
And time keeps moving
They say we’re all dying
So where’s the meaning

We may be sinning
But this town is drowning
And if it’s all ending
Let’s make some meaning
Track Name: Darkness For This Deed
Darkness For This Deed

Daddy always told me
I was destined
To rule this world
Like a loaded gun

Now I know
He wasn’t foolin’
‘I’ve done something
Can’t be undone

I was walking
Down these new streets
Towards the tracks
He was taking a ride

Wind from the train
Blew my hair
He made me laugh
And I stepped inside

It’s nothing new it’s the same old story
Written down for all to read
It don’t come with fame or glory
You get darkness for this deed
There’s only darkness for this deed

He taught me to laugh
With a wild freedom
On those evenings
In my time of need

I taught him to dance
In that smoky dancehall
He watched my hips
And followed my lead

We started out
Driving through the forest
Along the river
Towards the open fields

But later on
With the sun flooding down
Over our bodies
My fate was sealed

It’s nothing new it’s the same old story
Written down for all to read
It don’t come with fame or glory
You get darkness for this deed
There’s only darkness for this deed

By the end of the summer
I began to show
I went to my husband
and lied so he would never know

It’s nothing new it’s the same old story
Written down for all to read
It don’t come with fame or glory
You get darkness for this deed
There’s only darkness for this deed
Track Name: This Bed We Made
This Bed We Made

You’re pulling on your summer dress
I’m feeling like a fucking mess
Everything that once made sense
It has all gone to shit

I watch you smoke a cigarette
Sitting on the window set
Your eyes search the dark skyline
I tell myself everything is fine

The radio it softly hums
The distant sound of a drum
You light another cigarette
From your chin you wipe the sweat

I’m afraid if I up and leave
For years to come I’ll only see
You smoking that cigarette
And on your brow a string of sweat

This bed is not our bed
And everything we said
It all fell apart in the end
Put on your wedding ring
Listen as fate sings
Listen as she cuts our wings

You leave the room walk down the hall
Your silhouette it looks small
The setting sun now has gone
To the dark where we’ve withdrawn

I dress inside this room alone
I hear you talk on the telephone
Your voice is a static wave
And I’m its lonely useless slave

This bed is not our bed
And everything we said
It all fell apart in the end
Put on your wedding ring
Listen as fate sings
Listen as she cuts our wings

I hear you walk into the room
As if it were a cold tomb
The country music song that plays
It understands these final days

You wet your lips as if to speak
You lift a hand to my cheek
Your green eyes fall to the floor
We say no words I’m out the door

This bed is not our bed
And everything we said
It all fell apart in the end
Put on your wedding ring
Listen as fate sings
Listen as she cuts our wings
Track Name: Nothing to Hide
Nothing to Hide

I’m hoping when you read this letter
You’ll remember all our midnight rides
We thought times they could get no better
We thought we had nothing to hide

Oh the summer was our only child
The country roads our only guide
We shared heat we shared miles
We thought we had nothing to hide

If only July could last forever
When I felt young and I felt alive
In my life, I’d never known more pleasure
With you, I had nothing to hide

But the summer came to an end
We always knew I was someone’s bride
I have sinned, and I must make amends
You know we have so much to hide

In the morning I’ll leave this dying mess
I’ll force this fire inside me to die
Let it freeze and forget your sweet caress
For soon we’ll have nothing to hide
Track Name: 10,000 Watts
10,000 Watts

I could not go to bed
For to sleep tonight
The shadows in my head were strong
That dirty lady
Who held my heart
She was planning to do me wrong

I paced up and down
My kitchen floor
At my reflection I pointed my gun
I said to myself,
“What’s a man to do
When he’s been wounded by the sun?”

Oh me
Oh my
I’ve a head full of lies
Hope don’t know my name

Oh my
Oh me
Lord, let me be free
My heart is covered in flame

I grabbed my coat
Pulled on my boots
Headed out into the night
I looked up at the stars
Burning above
Shining down on me out of spite

So I aimed my gun
Up at the heavens
Unloaded six loud shots
But my bullets missed the man
At whom I was aiming
I was boilin’ at 10,000 watts

Oh me
Oh my
I’ve a head full of lies
Hope don’t know my name

Oh my
Oh me
Lord, let me be free
My heart is covered in flame

Truck tires squealed
Smoke filled my lungs
Moonlight lit my way
You in your sundress
Down by the river
How could you go astray

Well I could not go to bed
For to sleep tonight
The shadows in my head were strong
Oh that dirty lady
Who held my heart
She gone and done me wrong
Track Name: Undone
Undone

He turned onto her road
One hand on the wheel
The other wrapped around his gun
He was going to end this journey
Going to see her man

Daddy, I hope you can forgive me
For what it is I’ve done
And what I plan on doing
With this here loaded gun
You see I’m in the nothing
I am completely undone

I know you have watched me
Since you went to the grave
For those three years I tried
My best to behave
But as you know
I could not be saved

We were planning on leaving
Getting out of this town
She was carrying my child
She was wearing my crown
Then she wrote me a letter
In the dark I shot her down

Daddy after this is over
And I walk behind the veil
And I’m free of this world
And they set the last coffin nail
I’m coming to find you
Tell you the end of my tale
